WHAT IS A BIOETHANOL FIREPLACE?

A bioethanol fireplace is a clean-burning open fireplace that uses a renewable energy source, ethanol (or bioethanol), which is a plant-based, sustainable liquid alcohol fuel. Unlike traditional wood or gas fireplaces, ethanol fires burn clean, so they don’t need a chimney, flue or gas connection, creating a real flame without smoke, ash or soot, or complicated installation. In addition, the real flame produces real heat and a natural dancing flame, unlike electric fireplaces.

DO BIOETHANOL FIREPLACES PRODUCE HEAT?

Yes, however, there are a number of factors that will determine how warm a room will get, including the size of the fireplace, the size of the room itself and insulation properties - but an appropriately sized ethanol fire can produce a good amount of heat to keep you warm and comfortable.  Bioethanol fires are a complementary heat source rather than a whole home heater, however, they provide a number of benefits that can’t be achieved from primary heat sources such as reverse-cycle air conditioning or radiators.

HOW MUCH HEAT DO BIOETHANOL FIREPLACES PRODUCE?

Bioethanol fireplaces typically produce a heat output between 2kw-5kw, depending on the size and model - heating on average around 20-50m2.  In comparison, a standard electric heater produces around 1.5-2 kW, and a small gas heater can easily exceed 5-10kw. However, bioethanol produces a more gentle, softer heat and doesn’t dry out the air like a gas heater or electric convection heater.  Some built-in bioethanol designs utilise multiple burners and can produce as much as 8-13kw (heating over 120m2). However, there is a minimum m³ burning space requirement for all installations, therefore, the installed model (s) need to be appropriate in each application. Although there is no adjustable thermostat to control the room temperature, many of our bioethanol models may be adjusted to a low/high setting, enabling flexibility to enjoy the beautiful aesthetic of a flickering flame without overheating the room.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A BIOETHANOL FIREPLACE?

Biothanol fires have a range of design and lifestyle benefits. Aristore’s wide product range enables our fires to be used in both indoor and outdoor spaces within both residential and commercial environments to enhance the ambience and aesthetics, without the installation complications and typical restrictions of traditional fireplace settings such as flue and connections. It provides a sustainable, environmentally friendly heating system that is both visually stunning and effective, using the cleanest, most efficient fuel source on the market. HOW EASY IS IT TO INSTALL A BIOETHANOL FIREPLACE?

There are different types of bioethanol fireplaces: there are freestanding models that require no installation; ethanol burners that can simply be dropped into a non-combustible setting/custom open fire design, and others that are built-in fireplaces designed to be easily fixed into a stud wall or existing joinery. Because they do not require a flue or any connections, they are much easier to install than any gas or wood-burning fireplaces.

DOES INSTALLING A BIOETHANOL FIREPLACE SAVE ME ON CONSTRUCTION COSTS?

Installing an ethanol fireplace does not require any specialised trades or utility connections, reducing the need for multiple contractors - it saves both time and money!

DO I NEED A CHIMNEY, VENT OR FLUE?

Bioethanol fireplaces do not require a flue or chimney. They are ventless fireplaces because they burn clean and do not produce harmful fumes or greenhouse gas emissions, unlike other fuel source appliances/fireplaces - they produce no smoke, soot, ash, or residue, and the ethanol fire burns virtually odourless. The primary byproducts of bioethanol combustion are carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water vapour. The amount of CO₂ released is minimal and comparable to the CO₂ exhaled during normal breathing.

CAN I USE MY EXISTING FIREPLACE EVEN THOUGH THE FLUE IS BLOCKED OFF?

Yes, bioethanol fires are ventless fireplaces as they burn cleanly with no harmful emissions. With Aristore’s bioethanol burners or fireplace inserts, you can rekindle your existing fireplace to bring back a real flame with no flue required (ensure your flue is blocked off for an efficient and effective bioethanol fireplace conversion). For existing fireplace conversion, we recommend using our Fireplace Grates or Ethanol Burners.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A BIOTHANOL HEATER COMPARED TO HEATING YOUR HOUSE WITH A REVERSE CYCLE AIR CONDITIONER?

Understanding the distinction between "foundation" heating and "occasional" heating is crucial when selecting the right climate control solutions for your home.  Bioethanol fireplaces are suited to a single room application rather than acting as a whole home heater, offering supplementary warmth and ambience. While they may not replace the comprehensive coverage of foundation heating, they add a cozy atmosphere and aesthetic appeal to specific areas of your home that reverse cycle air conditioning doesn't provide. However, by integrating both systems within your home, you can tailor your home's climate to your preferences, enhancing both comfort and style.

HOW SAFE IS BURNING BIOETHANOL?

Ethanol (or bioethanol) is a very stable fuel source that, when used in an ethanol fireplace, combusts very evenly with no embers, soot, smoke or ash. It is completely contained within the burner unit, so it cannot escape or be unpredictable in the combustion process, unlike, for instance, timber, which can be inconsistent with combustion or can even move in the fireplace setting, thus requiring guards and a hearth.

HOW SAFE ARE BIOETHANOL FIREPLACES?

Safety is prioritised in every aspect of our ethanol fireplace designs and manufacturing processes. Our EcoSmart Fire burners are crafted from high-quality 304-grade stainless steel and undergo a deep-draw fabrication method to ensure structural integrity and eliminate potential leaks.  A key safety feature is the patented fuel filling system, which separates the fuel inlet from the ignition zone. This design allows the fuel canister spout to be fully supported before releasing the fuel, minimising the risk of spills or splashes during refuelling. Additionally, this system reinforces the maximum fill line within the burner, ensuring safe operation. When in use, our ethanol fireplaces produce only heat, carbon dioxide (the same CO₂ we exhale), and water vapour—without emitting soot, smoke, ash, or other harmful substances common in traditional wood-burning fireplaces.  To ensure proper ventilation and safe operation of your ethanol fireplace, it's essential to follow the recommended minimum room sizes and clearance requirements specified in our installation manual.

WHAT FEATURES SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A SAFE & RELIABLE ETHANOL FIREPLACE?

When selecting a reputable ethanol fireplace, it's essential to consider several key safety and design features such as safety compliance (ensure the fireplace meets relevant safety standards and certifications), safety accessories (look for included accessories like safety lighters and safety jerry cans to facilitate safe operation), solid stainless steel construction (high-quality stainless steel), No moving parts (to minimise wear and potential safety hazards), and clearly marked filling points.

HOW DO I LIGHT MY BIOETHANOL FIREPLACE AND SHUT IT OFF?

To ensure the safe operation of your bioethanol fireplace, always use the provided lighting rod. This tool allows you to maintain a safe distance while igniting and extinguishing the flame. Simply dip the tip of the lighting rod into the fuel reservoir to wet the tip with a small amount of bioethanol. Ignite the wet tip with a lighter and then carefully insert the lit tip into the burner opening to ignite the fuel. Use the same lighting rod to cover the burner opening, cutting off the oxygen supply and safely extinguishing the flame.

HOW CAN I REDUCE MY CARBON FOOTPRINT?

Opting for a bioethanol fireplace is an effective way to lower your carbon footprint while enjoying a warm, ambient fire. Bioethanol is an eco-friendly renewable fuel source derived from plant materials such as sugarcane and maise, which absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) during their growth. When burned, bioethanol releases an equivalent amount of CO₂ back into the atmosphere, maintaining a balanced carbon cycle and making it a carbon-neutral heating option. This eliminates the release of by-products that create greenhouse gas emissions. By choosing a bioethanol fireplace, you can enjoy the warmth and ambience of a real flame while supporting sustainable energy practices and reducing your home's environmental impact.

HOW POPULAR ARE ETHANOL FIRES?

Bioethanol fireplaces have become a popular choice for both residential and commercial spaces worldwide, offering a versatile and eco-friendly alternative to traditional heating methods. They provide a convenient solution without the need for chimneys or gas lines, making them particularly suitable for apartments and homes where gas isn’t an option. Available in various styles, including freestanding, wall-mounted, and built-in models, bioethanol fireplaces can complement a diverse range of interior designs. Their sleek and contemporary appearance enhances the aesthetic appeal of any space. Bioethanol fireplaces have now become a standard inclusion in many homes and commercial premises, offering both functional warmth and visual appeal.

WHAT MAINTENANCE IS REQUIRED FOR BIOETHANOL FIREPLACES?

Maintaining your ethanol fireplace is a fairly simple process. As ethanol burns clean, there is little cleaning required in most cases - cleaning your bioethanol burner only needs to take place after you have used 50 litres of fuel or as soon as you see black residue on the burner. After extensive use, the burner chamber can be removed from the setting & washed in hot, soapy water, then rinsed and allowed to dry completely, ready for next use. Other than cleaning from time to time, there are no parts requiring replacement, and the burner’s 304 stainless steel construction ensures the internal mechanics won’t deteriorate like some other brands, providing unlimited use for many years.
